2021 – An opportunity that came through Instagram. I was asked to design a different kind of wedding present. Since the backstory is a bit involved, I’ve copied the full text from the original social media post below:
โข For those who know me personally, my mom’s a 10yr breast cancer survivor and we run a nonprofit (@shoubf) so I know many brave men/women who’ve battled, beaten, and been lost to this horrendous disease.
โข Enter: Vickey who had been following me for a few years and finally had a job for me – but it came with a heavy heart…
Vickey’s husband John has a friend (“J”) who became a close friend of them both – called by Vickey, “the most positive person she knows.” And -deep breath- she was diagnosed with cancer… just before her wedding date.
When it came to the perfect gift, Vickey wanted something that her friend could put on when she wanted to hide her hair loss and still feel gorgeous.
As an avid Cubs fan, a cap that paid homage to the passtime, complete with red stitching like a baseball, embellished with hearts like the ones J finds in the wild… lined with gold satin to feel better than scratchy ball cap.
I’m sad to have to make a gift that references the sad reality of a cancer diagnosis, but I’m happy that Vickey felt comfortable enough to share this story with me, trust me to create this piece, and also that I know a little bit about what it’s like to have someone close to me go through cancer to contribute to make this piece simple and elegant, but still special enough to wear on her wedding day, her radiation or chemo days, and all her cancer-free ones to come
